I agree with you Nancy. Very clever, but I'm not sure what the rain is -- or was to Fogarty. It could have been the Vietnam War. The reference to Virginia, he has said was about going to DC, or the government. And at the time (as perhaps today) the government did not seem to be the answer. It was a growing tower (possible reference to the Tower of Babel -- but it could be Mordor for all I know). I put this one out there because its familiar and still being played, but the words, as I have said before, are often given a pass. These are worth reflection I think.
Ben, I, too, noticed the probable Tower of Babel reference which was interesting. Considering the era, I tend to believe the “rain” was the Vietnam war or the government’s mishandling of it.....all the lives lost for no true gain, similar to the Middle East. The lyrics were definitely intentional, trying to give his viewpoint, not sounds good gibberish.
