Light is so important to God that when you read the story of creation God spends more time creating and talking about the light than any other thing in creation. As you pointed out, light has more recognizable qualities than salt. Light can be seen from a distance which means it is readily recognizable. SO, if we are the light of the world then when people recognize that light, then they can experience us being both light and salt.

The people who shine a light in my life are very genuine. Not only are they upbeat and positive, they are a joy to be around. I find myself wanting to respond in a similar fashion. I appreciate in your message today there are practical suggestions on how we too can follow that call to be the light.

As believers we are to be salt here on earth. We are to flavor life, so to speak, with the goodness we have in Jesus. So then if world refers to heaven & earth it makes sense to me that Christ is “the light of the world”. In Revelation 22:5 we are told “And there will no longer be any night; and they will not have need of the light of a lamp nor the light of the sun, because the Lord God will illumine them; and they will reign forever and ever.”

Good points. My take on the difference between the words “earth” and “world” is perspective - it is view. The earth makes me think about standing on the ground. World is the bigger picture, the entire globe. Because Jesus is high and lifted up, it makes sense to me he is the Light of the World. But of course there is a lot of blending here. I see Jesus as the Good Shepherd walking on the earth as well.
