When the problems of the world are in our face, affecting our lives, and leading us to fear, we have the best chance of survival by trying to make sense of our situation as clearly as possible.
In times of ease and plenty, important life choices seem optional. Many people seem to do whatever brings them the greatest pleasure. This is the broad-choice-way inviting us to watch the latest series on cable or ride the newest ride at a popular theme park nearby or far away. It is choosing the unserious and popular over the the difficult and fundamental.
Is there anything wrong with entertainment and recreation? Not necessarily, unless it is really a choice to avoid seeking to take seriously why we are living at this time in world history.
So what is the narrow gate? It’s the one that leads to God and His people — those who will always in this world most likely be in the unpopular, even persecuted, minority.
As Jesus said to those with ears tuned to his voice —
Forward the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.
