What we are able to see is related to our understanding and perceptions. Usually we only see what we expect to see. Also we see what we are focused on seeing. Peripheral matters often remain hidden. This explains a lot about how we form opinions and prejudices. It also helps us understand how it is possible to be duped.
I once heard a congressman, when talking about the public’s general loss of confidence with many government institutions today that perception is reality to the beholder.
In other words, if someone is doing the right thing but it is perceived as being the wrong thing, there is only one way to try and correct the problem — Full Disclosure. Come clean. Tell the truth.
Only by full disclosure and allowing people to see and understand from all angles can trust ever possibly be restored. This is why character matters to begin with. Every scandal teaches this.
