Seeking consensus and agreement are noble objectives if (and it is sad I should even have to say this) if the particular political, social, or moral position is a righteous one. Otherwise, we need to actually accept disagreements and inequities as proofs of true and healthy diversity. This is what permits iron to sharpen iron. (Proverbs 27:17)
Sadly, a few seek to weaken our society by forcing consensus and agreement over the idea that some people are born racists, not based on their beliefs and behavior, but due to the color of their skin. This is perfectly acceptable where logic is just someone’s opinion. It can’t work, however, in any world having to operate in reality.
Such odd thinking is a part of what is proudly called Wokism, which is a grammatically weak and poorly understood belief system that holds that woke people, (meaning those who agree with them) are better than those who are unwoke because, for one thing, they are unified when it comes to the importance of diversity. The proof this is the case is the woke’s willingness to censor, intimidate, or shame all who might disagree with them.
Wokists preach diversity as being more important than ability which theoretically works in every society that does not need to pilot airplanes or perform surgical procedures. Even here I might be insulting the intelligence of the indigenous tribes who lack airports and operating rooms but still believe men and women to be different from one another, which is definitely not a woke-endorsed concept.
Now let’s get real.
I believe the reason all I have described thus far seems off is because diversity is not possible at the level of the SHARED language, experience, skin color, gender, sexual orientation, worldview, or anything else that is shared. Anything we have in common is, by definition, CONFORMITY.
True diversity is at the level of the individual. This is where we are truly unique and most remarkable.
Diversity is critical in our world because no one can take the place of anyone else. We were each created uniquely original.
Now you might be thinking that you, as a person, aren’t of much value. You might be thinking that you wish you were someone else. It may be fair to be dissatisfied, depending on your circumstances, but even if you could transplant yourself into a different life, it would not turn out as you think because all that would have changed in the metamorphosis is everything that is not You. And the You you are would, over a bit of time, break out of your illusory shell and return you an unhappiness not dissimilar to what you are experiencing right now.
Circumstances are fluid and can change for the better or worse, but, deep down, you will remain just as you are — unless…
Unless you do the work of moving yourself from where and who you are right now to a better place and self. But this will be through intentional acts, not by sleepily dreaming that a crazy woke society will come to your rescue. Best to look for another deeper solution at the still point of this turning world.
I think of reforming my habits to form a deeper relationship with a Christian life. Repentance and redemption...... words that require me to surrender rebellious, wayward habits and re-learn them with Christ as the Teacher this time.
