The problem with holidays is they are not predictable or reproducible, and yet they really can’t be avoided. Some or many we know are psyching for the Big Day, whatever day it might be, and planning for a wonderful time. In fact, this could be a description of us.
And you know, sometimes we or they pull it off. Everyone, as far as we are aware, has a great time. The food is delicious, the gifts are perfect, and no one annoying overstays their visit.
Then there are other years when the same important day hits and something, or many things are off. The most significant one usually is that we are not with someone or many ones we love. Some have passed away. Others, for many reasons, just can’t make it. So we muddle through the best we can.
But here’s some great news.
The holiday is not about you.
Whether or not it meets some standard you have set in your imagination, is of no importance.
If this hurts your feelings, then I’m glad we got this out of the way so you can step into the spiritual discipline of partying for others this upcoming holiday.
That’s right.
You are going to be with others to love on them, especially the sad, the lonely, and the little ones.
Think about your best Thanksgiving, Christmas, birthday, or other holiday ever.
What made it so?
Answer: The intentional loving work of adults in your life. They gave you attention. They celebrated you celebrating that holiday perhaps for the first time.
Now you are the adult and the shoe is on the other foot. It is your turn to help others, especially children, celebrate.
Finally, I will make a prediction.
If you give yourself away this holiday season to bless others, it is very likely you won’t have such a bad time yourself.
Just sayin…
So very true
