What, besides God, grips your mind and calls you to worship? In the Bible these are called idols.
So it boils down to either fearing life or worshiping God. So much of my time has been to go to church to learn, to think, to be seen as acceptable by other believers with the hope that something might enable me to do a better job at work and home. What I often missed was true worship where the world fades and I simply tell God what's going on and what he means to me. Certainly at first it feels unnatural.
For those of us who more or less stayed out of major trouble before coming to understand the gospel, our problem is we start out thinking too highly of ourselves in comparison to who God really is. It will be during our spiritual growth that we begin to see the truth in this area. Our struggle will be in really wanting to see a glory beyond the generally good things we are enjoying in this world. Our great struggle is a divided loyalty between two masters. This life is too cozy and heaven is too hazy.
For those who found God after scraping or slamming onto rock bottom, who know what crashing and burning really feel like, who face the pain and regrets every time they look in the mirror, their challenge going forward is to get over themselves in a different way -- to actually overcome the pride of their own wretched testimonies and the resentment they can easily feel towards those they imagine have enjoyed lives much more enjoyable than their own.
Dr Ben, I am so appreciating these posts. They provide a poignant insight into things I have never thought of or a new way to view the things I have. Thank you!
