If we don’t have what we think we want or need we can see our lives as of little significance. We are bit players in someone else’s play.
Something in us begins whispering thoughts like: “I’m being ripped off.”
What is difficult to appreciate at low-self-esteem moments is the fact that
in this day,
if we can just focus,
there is everything we need.
It is the fulfillment of that part of the Lord’s Prayer dealing with our daily bread.
Which brings up this question,
How often am I just praying for things I already have?
Perhaps a better prayer might be to ask for my eyes to be opened and to be shown how blessed I really am right now.
Oh I know, there might be a few right now’s when I am barely holding it together, but this is common to life, and a reason to go to something as retro and archaic as church.
Tragedy, heartbreak, and disappointments can overwhelm my emotions to the point i can’t even think, let alone pray clearly.
But here is the good news.
God already knows.
When these times hit, better and more life saving than isolating is to find my prayer community; those who will lift me before our Heavenly Father and cry for my recovery in ways I just can’t muster at the time.
It’s what we are actually called to do.
Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray.
Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise.
Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.
Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed.
The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.
