It is easy to buy the lies and become incapacitated by shame. The path out of the depression of shame requires courage. It involves doing the most frightening thing usually imaginable to the one suffering. It demands rigorous honesty to God, one’s self, and at least one other individual.
Domestic abuse also creates enormous shame. It comes from being isolated from the outside world and expected to tell lies. The path to recovery is just the same — speaking the truth out loud to God, oneself, and at least one other human being.
I would never have considered checking out a recovery meeting had I not been invited by a friend who told me he would meet me there.
If you are suffering silently, know there are people who care right around you. Pray that God will lead you to kind tender faces. Ask him to pop their faces into your mind right now.
