I had to take my truck in for service.
A little light had come on.
So I drove it to AutoZone. There they plugged in a little computer into a receptacle under the dashboard and pull down a coded message explaining what it was my truck wanted me to know. Next, I contacted the service department of the car repair place I use and then the following day drove the truck in.
Days later, having paid the mechanics who switched out the necessary parts, I drove the truck out feeling both lighter in wallet and spirit — grateful I was still able to drive and a bit more aware of how expensive the whole driving thing actually is. Sometimes a lift in my mood is just the lifting of a hassle I’ve had to deal with along with everything else. “After all,” I tell myself, “there was a time not that long ago when people were riding horses, walking a lot, and dealing with a roadside manure problem that no longer exists. Such is progress I suppose.
Yes, life is full of hassles and whoever drives will hit their share of potholes, spend a good deal time waiting for things to be repaired, or if they are so inclined and gifted, fix it themselves. And what is true in the transportation world is also true in education, healthcare, and every other aspect of life.
And the alternative?
Stay in bed?
Sounds nice for a moment I suppose.
But even that can get old.
As my mom used to say, “Variety is the spice of life.”
So, have a great day — unless, of course, you have other plans.
“There’s some hard times in the neighborhood, but why can’t every day be just this good?”
