Faith is transferring my ignorance and weakness to God’s complete knowledge and strength.
By faith I am choosing to take His word and go His way as my ride through life.
So what’s my real plan?
That’s my real plan.
To walk, drive, fly, sail, or sit by faith, not by sight.
Here is what this means in practical terms.
It means, by faith, I am never alone. I have a consultant and a guide with me at all times who is never wrong. I am free to talk all I want, but I am also obliged to patiently listen. It also means, if I am wise, that he drives. I am just a passenger with a great view.
It means, by faith, I get to have seasons of rest and recreation as He prescribes. The world and all its problems no longer revolve around me. I get to laugh and just contribute my salt and light to the mix.
It means, by faith, I choose not to live by the ups and downs of my emotions.
This is huge.
My emotions will continue to exist and at times they will plague me, but they are never allowed in the driver’s seat.
In fact, I think I’ll put them in the trunk. (Just kidding, sort of).
It also gives me the perspective that when others are behaving in irritating ways it might be their emotions have climbed into their driver’s seat.
It also means, by faith, I choose to fear only God.
I will practice behaving as if God is bigger than all my fear monsters combined.
It also means I will not trifle with God. He is not my little buddy or even my big buddy.
And they went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” And he awoke and rebuked the wind and the raging waves, and they ceased, and there was a calm. He said to them, “Where is your faith?” And they were afraid, and they marveled, saying to one another, “Who then is this, that he commands even winds and water, and they obey him?”
Luke 8:24-25 (ESV)
Because of His enormous love He allows me to grow in my understanding of who He really is. This, by His grace, permitted me, during my newborn believer stage, to see Him as small, meek, and mild. But as I grow in knowledge and experiences He must continue, in my mind of faith, to grow bigger as I proportionally grow much smaller.
Finally, by faith, I take His instruction seriously to find and join a faith community so I can actively be with and care for those whom He loves, even should they drive like maniacs.
Your definition of faith is thoughtful and unique. It is followed by practical insights on how we can grow and maintain that faith. The Michael Card song at the end only enhances such an inspirational message. Thank you for this.
