No promises. No guarantees.
Anything can happen tomorrow, and something will.
But I don’t and won’t know what it is with certainty.
I might guess what will happen ahead of time and be right, but might be wrong as well.
Odds favor I will be wrong.
Someone who knows something I might not know can tell me what they know is a sure thing, but then, they might be wrong.
I can go with their advice, but if their advice turns out to be wrong, then I might be disappointed, but shouldn’t really be surprised.
It is reasonable to plan ahead, but I just can’t go there to live right now without becoming disoriented - mistaking speculations for really.
Life will not necessarily be better tomorrow than it is right now, even though what I do might affect the future in positive healthy ways. Then again, the future still might not turn out as I would want.
But this is only a small part of the story for those with spiritual eyes
What seems to the world as black, white, and in-between shades of dull grey explodes into a rainbow of colors for those with trust in the words and works of a Higher Power, as my recovery friends put it.
In spite my inability to discern my own brief future here on earth, I know how the story will end for me and others who trust Jesus, the Lamb of God. That’s my faith in a nut shell. I trust the Jesus I read about in the four gospels.
But he isn’t just a historic figure. Open to the last chapter of the last book in the Bible, and this is what it says.
Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city; also, on either side of the river, the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. No longer will there be anything accursed, but the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him. They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. And night will be no more. They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever.
Revelation 22:1-5 (ESV)
Let my brother Mac sing to you about what the future holds for those who come on down to the River of Life.
